In Abyei, a region long caught between conflict and displacement, education has too often been interrupted by fear, instability, and lack of resources. For many children, classrooms have been replaced by makeshift shelters or long walks to distant learning centers—if any exist at all.
At Bishop Gassis Relief and Rescue Foundation (BGRRF), we believe that even in the most fragile places, every child has the right to learn. That’s why our education program in Abyei is working to restore not just buildings, but hope.
Bringing Classrooms Back to Life
In 2023, our team partnered with local leaders and parish communities to identify schools in critical need. Some had been damaged by conflict, while others simply lacked safe infrastructure, materials, or trained teachers.
With support from our donors and local church networks, BGRRF has:
-
Rehabilitated 3 primary school blocks
-
Supplied over 400 children with learning materials
-
Recruited and trained community-based volunteer teachers
-
Provided emergency education kits for displaced learners
-
Set up safe learning spaces for girls and children with disabilities
Why School Matters in Crisis Zones
For children affected by displacement or conflict, school is more than just a place to learn—it’s a safe space, a routine, a sense of normalcy. It is also a shield against risks like child labor, early marriage, and recruitment into violence.
Girls in particular face enormous challenges. Without access to school, they are more likely to drop out permanently. BGRRF integrates gender-sensitive strategies into every education initiative, ensuring that girls have access to school uniforms, menstrual hygiene support, and trained female mentors.
Local Collaboration, Lasting Impact
Our work is made possible through deep collaboration with parish priests, parent-teacher committees, and community leaders. Local ownership is essential—not only to make learning accessible, but to keep schools open and safe long after construction ends.
Investing in the Future
Education is one of the most powerful tools for peace and development. In Abyei, every restored classroom is a step toward stability, equity, and long-term recovery. These children are not just students—they are future leaders, healers, and changemakers.
