Access to Safe Water Is Saving Lives in Twic County
In many parts of South Sudan, access to clean and safe water remains one of the greatest daily struggles. In Twic County, a region frequently affected by displacement and conflict, families often walk several kilometers to collect water—often from unsafe sources that lead to waterborne diseases and chronic health issues.
At Bishop Gassis Relief and Rescue Foundation (BGRRF), we believe that clean water is not a privilege—it is a basic human right and a foundation for dignity, health, and development. That’s why our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) team recently completed the installation of a new community borehole in the heart of Twic County.
A Lifeline for Over 800 People
This borehole, which taps into a deep and reliable groundwater source, is now supplying safe and potable water to over 800 people in the surrounding villages. For many families, this is the first time they’ve had access to clean water within walking distance from their homes.
“We used to drink from the river, and my children were always sick,” says Maria, a mother of five. “Since this borehole was built, we have clean water, and my family hasn’t suffered from diarrhea or typhoid.”
Designed with Community Involvement
Our WASH projects are designed with sustainability and community participation at their core. Before drilling began, our team conducted site assessments in consultation with local leaders, women’s groups, and youth representatives to identify the most urgent needs and the best location for impact.
In addition, we formed a local Water Management Committee trained in basic borehole maintenance, hygiene promotion, and record-keeping. This ensures the borehole remains functional and protected long after installation.
A Gateway to Better Health and Hygiene
Access to clean water has triggered a broader transformation in the community. With the borehole in place, more families are adopting proper handwashing practices, school attendance among girls has improved, and cases of waterborne diseases at the nearby health center have dropped by over 30% in just two months.
Children no longer spend hours fetching water and can instead focus on their education and play. Women are saving time and energy that was once spent walking long distances—energy they can now use for income-generating activities.
More Than Water—It’s Hope
This project is just one example of how BGRRF is working to build healthier, more resilient communities in South Sudan. Clean water is not just about survival—it opens the door to growth, safety, and dignity.
As we continue expanding our WASH programs to other vulnerable regions, we remain committed to faith-driven service, local empowerment, and long-term impact.
